Enhance your class's trip to
the Mütter Museum with one of our disturbingly informative
programs for students in grades 5-12. Lessons last 45 minutes
and are held in our new Koop Community Education Center.
Our current Mütter Lessons are:
Germ Wars
While less than two-hundred years old, the idea that germs
make people sick has totally revolutionized not only medicine
but our daily lives, from getting shots at the doctor to
washing our hands before we eat. Discover the incredible,
astonishing, and sometimes disgusting stories of the men
and women who first fought germs and learned how to keep
us healthy.
Bone Detectives
What happens when a skeleton is discovered? How do scientists use bones to solve crimes? Learn about the role of forensic anthropology in criminal investigation and what can be learned from examining skeletal remains.
Savvy Surfing
When it comes to doing online research can your students
tell fact from fiction? Do they know what makes a website
trustworthy? To help shine a light on these issues, the
College of Physicians of Philadelphia's PhillyHealthInfo.org
staff are offering a new training class that teaches critical
thinking skills in the online environment.
Understanding Differences
Sometimes people with medical conditions are seen as 'strange'
or 'weird.' In this class, students will explore the meaning
of empathy through activities designed to promote tolerance
and help them understand what life is like for someone who
is 'different'.
Body Modification
For thousands of years, humans have been changing their
bodies. Explore body modification around the world, from
foot binding to ear piercing, from corsets to neck coils.
See Museum objects not normally on display, and learn about
the health implications of common body modifications.
Presidential Health
What happens when the President of the United States gets
sick? Does the American public have the right to know? How
were Presidents cared for after assassination attempts?
What is the 25th Amendment, and how and when does it go
into effect? This class will explore the history of Presidential
health care from George Washington to George W. Bush.
All lessons are based on Pennsylvania Academic Standards.
Mütter Lessons are available Monday through Friday. Museum
admission is $6 per student in pre-scheduled groups, with
one chaperone admitted free for every ten paying students.
