Dr. Mütter, whose 1856 donation of 1,700 anatomical and pathological specimens forms the basis of the museum’s collection, specialized in plastic surgery. He developed a successful operation for club foot and was one of the first doctors in Philadelphia to use ether anesthesia and advocate its (now obvious) merits.
