College Fellowship
Qualifications for Fellowship

The qualifications of Fellowship shall be at least one of the following:

  1. One who has obtained a doctoral degree in medicine or in a discipline relating to medicine at least 5 years prior to election.
  2. One who does not have a doctoral degree in medicine or a discipline relating to medicine, but is engaged in work that contributes to the advancement or understanding of medicine.
  3. One who is well qualified to help serve the interests of the College.
  4. One approved by the Committee on Nominations as a candidate for election to the Board.
  5. A physician, scientist, or scholar of eminence who has made a significant contribution to medicine or to the understanding of medicine may be elected an Honorary Fellow on recommendation of the Committee on Awards.
  6. An individual who has presented the Secretary with a valid petition may be entitled, temporarily or permanently, to status as an Inactive Fellow with the concurrence of the President.
  7. In addition to the minimal qualifications described in this Article, the Board may prescribe additional qualifications by resolution.
Election Procedures
  1. Candidates for Fellowship are proposed by two current Fellows of the College (nominator and secondary sponsor).
  2. Letters to support each nomination must be written by both the nominator and the secondary sponsor.
  3. Candidates must submit a completed "Proposition for Fellowship" form and current curriculum vitae.
  4. All materials must be sent to the attention of the Chair, Committee on Admissions, at the College's address. Nominators assume the responsibility of making sure that all materials are complete.
  5. Names of candidates are posted at the College and emailed Fellows (who have provided email addresses) two weeks prior to each Committee on Admissions meeting.
  6. Candidates' credentials are evaluated by the Committee on Admissions. Upon approval, they are sent to the Executive Committee for review. Upon favorable review by the Executive Committee, the candidates are recommended to the Board for election to Fellowship.
  7. Newly elected Fellows and their sponsors receive written notification of election results.

Library Services

Access
  • The Library is available by appointment only.
  • Fellows have access to all the Library's journal, monograph, photograph, archive, and manuscript holdings.
  • Fellows may have direct access to the Library stacks with a stacks pass, obtainable at the circulation desk.
  • The Library's online catalog, accessible via the College web site, includes most of the College's books and journal holdings.
Circulation
  • Fellows automatically receive borrowing privileges for materials that circulate from the Library and are issued a library card. Some material, such as rare books, do not circulate.
  • Advanced paging of material is available. Fellows may call the circulation desk, (215)563-3737, ext. 297, to request that items be paged in advance.
Photocopy
  • Each fiscal year (July 1-June 30) Fellows receive 100 pages of photocopied materials free of charge from the Library for their own use. Requests in excess of 100 pages will be charged at $0.50 per page and billed monthly.
  • Fellows using PubMed to search MEDLINE and other National Library of Medicine databases may utilize LoansomeDoc to place electronic orders for photocopies of documents from the College's document delivery department.
Interlibrary Loan
  • Fellows may borrow books and journals from the Library free of charge. They may also request two items (books and journal articles) per year from other libraries through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) free of charge. Each additional request will be filled for the cost of the ILL request plus a $5.00 service fee.
Reference Services
  • Fellows may utilize a wide-range of services such as brief factual searches, citation verification, historical researches, and computerized literature searches. Fellows receive two free hours of extended reference work per fiscal year. Reference work beyond two hours is billed at the rate of $25.00 per hour.
  • Free access Internet access is available in the Library Reading Room, 2nd Floor. Fellows may use one of two public access computer workstations to access Internet resources, including PubMed (MEDLINE) and CPPSource, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia's Online Catalog.
Museum Privileges
  • Fellows and their families are admitted to the Gallery and Mütter Museum free of charge. A discount is offered on purchases from the College gift shop.
Invitations to College Programs
  • Fellows receive invitations to College programs including College Night, College Lectures, Section programs, Wood Institute programs, and the Annual Meeting.
Rental Facilities
  • The magnificent College building is available for rental for personal or professional meetings, conferences, or events. A reduced rate is offered to Fellows. Contact the Office of Facilities Rental at 215-563-3737, ext. 283 for additional information.
Parking Privileges
  • Fellows pay a discounted rate at the Central Allright parking lot on 21st and Ludlow Streets, located directly behind the College. Parking is free after 5:30 p.m. Parking stickers are provided at the beginning of each fiscal year.
Voting Privileges and Committee Service
  • Fellows enjoy the privilege of voting for College Officers and Trustees, and amendments to the By-Laws. They may also serve on College committees.
