The Sturgis Collection of Medical Images
Welcome to the database to the Samuel B.
Sturgis Collection, the largest collection of images held by the College of
Physicians. The Sturgis Collection contains images from the history of
medicine, including portraits, buildings, groups, and historical subjects.
The Collection, containing over 8,000 images, is named after Fellow of the
College Samuel Booth Sturgis (1891-1983), who contributed many items to the
Collection and oversaw its initial cataloguing.
The database was constructed using a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Currently the database provides access only to portraits of physicians, and there are no scanned images attached to the records in the database. You may, however, check to see if the Sturgis Collection contains the image of a particular physician.
If you desire a reproduction of an image or would like further reference assistance, please contact the Library of the College of Physicians at libref@collphyphil.org or call (215) 563-3737, ext. 297.
