The Historical
Medical Digital Library
of the College of Physicians
of Philadelphia
The Historical
Medical Digital Library (HMDL) is
being developed to enhance electronic access to the Historical Collections of
the Library of the College of Physicians. It is not intended to provide
complete digital copies of historical medical books. Rather, HMDL allows
patrons to browse electronically selected books significant in the history of
medicine. You browse electronically, but also in the traditional
sense: a virtual pulling the book off the shelf.
HMDL is intended for all types of patrons, from the merely curious to the serious scholar. In this virtual browsing library are:

Book entries on the browsing list also contain the College of Physicians' call number.
Books were selected mainly for
their importance in the history of medicine: most books appear in Garrison and Morton's Medical Bibliography
(5th edition). Where applicable, the Garrison and
Morton number is
indicated with the initials GM followed by the number. Books without a GM
number were selected for their importance to the College of Physicians, associational value, or
graphical
interest.
