Lavater, J. Essays on physiogomy (1794).
Johann Caspar Lavater (1741-1801) was
one of the last descriptive physiognomists, one who studies temperament and
character from facial features. His work greatly influenced
portraiture. Originally published in 1772 in German, this work is the
first American edition. Plate IV is featured in the College's Library
brochure.
