Biography
John Thomas Carter was born in 1850 in Triadelphia, West Virginia. He attended
Washington and Jefferson College for two years before transferring to Princeton
University, where he received his A.B. in 1871. He entered the Medical
Department of the University of Cincinnati and graduated with an M.D. in 1874.
After an internship and short appointment as house physician at the Good
Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Carter moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to
become the Assistant Director of the state-run Lunatic Hospital in South Boston.
Five years later (1880) Carter returned to Triadelphia to set up private
practice and became a member of the West Virginia State Medical Association.
After a two-week illness, Carter died at his home on 6 March 1936 of empyema of
the gallbladder and chronic nephritis.
Scope and Contents
One volume (39 p. + 2 loose leaves) of narcotics prescriptions dated 10 March
1920 to 1 July 1933. Each entry contains date, name, narcotic and dosage. Loose
leaves are 2 prescriptions for specific patients.
